Garden Patio Installation, Mousehole

EGD Renovations designed and installed a limestone sett patio for a cottage in Mousehole near Penzance, overcoming significant access challenges and difficult ground conditions. The project involved extensive excavation through rocky soil, construction of a French drain, raising buried drain covers and moving a granite water trough to create a functional, beautifully designed garden space.

Works included:

Main House:

  • Complete design and layout planning

  • Excavation to 400mm depth removing old slate patio, rubble and rocky soil

  • Rotovator work to loosen soil and reveal rocks for removal

  • 50mm MOT sub-base installation, compacted

  • Slurry application to setts to prevent staining

  • Limestone sett installation in 50-70mm cement bed

  • Grouting between setts

  • French drain construction with perforated pipe, pea gravel and stone

  • Raising multiple buried drain covers to accessible level

  • Extended raised bed construction

  • Moving large granite water trough using levels and metal poles as rollers

  • Granite trough incorporated as bird bath feature

  • Full project management

Project challenges: All materials transported approximately 100m from car park around Mousehole harbour via back garden gate. Electric wheelbarrow purchased specifically for this project due to steep hills. Team stayed on-site in the cottage for duration of works to eliminate daily travel.
